“Service to mankind is service to God” means that selfless service for the cause of humanity is as important as worshiping God.
When we serve the people, our fellow human beings, it is also a way of serving God. Therefore, service to humanity is service to God. There is no greater service than service to humanity or to your own fellow human beings. Service to others: a person, a group, a community, for a noble cause or for a strong belief — means that you have chosen to engage yourself in service to the society without expecting anything in return.
To serve God is to serve human being created by Him and this is the greatest form of charity work: the pure love of Christ. Jesus Christ said: “I give you a new commandment: love one another as I have loved you. If you have love for one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciple” ( John 13:34).
When we think of Service to mankind, we immediately recall all the saints and Mother Teresa who served others. “I see God in every human being. A life not lived for others is not a life.” — Mother Teresa
Service to the Community by Social Service Society
I started my career in a Charitable Trust : St. Xavier’s Social Service Society, Ahmedabad, Gujarat State, India and had been working for 8 years. This service gave me a lot of Insight, Dedication, a sense of Responsibility, Satisfaction and Fulfilment. The Director & Founder of this Society, Rev. Fr. Ramiro Erviti S.J. (a Catholic Priest from Spain) was actively involved in various developmental activities with many Social Workers and passed-out students of St. Xavier’s High School. He used to take the youngsters from the slums and also from St. Xavier’s High School for a Summer Camp at Mount Abu. Before leaving for Mount Abu, he used to sign at least 3 Blank Cheques and give me to preserve them and use them for any emergency in the Society. I stopped him signing the Blank Cheques. He used to tell me, “let my hands wither away if I don’t trust you“. This action and these words inculcated more Trust and Responsibility in me in disbursing my duties.
There were many projects, programs, service to humanity with meaningful activities for:
a) Slum Dwellers of Ahmedabad City, Gujarat State, India
St. Xavier’s Social Service Society worked in 2 major slums of Ahmedabad, namely, Shahpur & Mahajan-no-Vando. They used to have programs for Children, Youths and Ladies with the help of Social Workers. There were programs like Non-formal Education Program, Various Camps for the Youths, Community Health Program, Income Generation Program & General Awareness Programs.
b) People who were affected by Morbi Flood who were resettled in Sankalitnagar, Juhapura Area, Ahmedabad, Gujarat State, India with many programs like Community Development, Health Care and Income Generation Activities.
c) Adivasi Cooperative Society covering Unskilled Labourers migrated with their families from Panchmahal & Dahod Districts, Gujarat who come in search of work on daily wage basis. These labourers do not get their 100% wages because of involvement of middlemen or contractors. Also, these labourers remain Unskilled Labourers and get paid less. They don’t have any opportunity to learn anything more and earn more. They go for construction work, road-laying, road repairs, etc. A Society named “Adivasi Cooperative Society” was formed by St. Xavier’s Social Service Society. All the Adivasi members of this society were trained on various skills of construction work. This cooperative society worked in close association with a Housing Development Authority, a subsidiary of ASAG (Ahmedabad Study Action Group) which executed many construction projects in Gujarat.
d) They also executed many projects in association with Blind Men’s Association, Ahmedabad, Gujarat State, India. A strong belief of Service to the Community is Service to the Nation, is felt and applied here practically.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by well established Organisations
Every well established Corporate has very meaningful Social Initiative or Social Responsibility through which they reach out to the needy.
I was working in an organisation, CMC Limited, which was formerly A Government of India Enterprise, it became a TATA Enterprise (Subsidiary to TCS) later. Now it is merged with TATA Consultancy Services (TCS).
CMC Limited had Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. The company gives back to the community as Service to the Citizen through volunteering, sponsorship programs, etc in the fields of
Education and Skill Building.
Health and Wellness.
Environmental Sustainability.
Direct Service to the Well Deserving and the Needy Community by using their specialised professionals and experts.
The Company used to give us some budget & funds every year with some basic guidelines to arrange and organise activities beneficial to the people who are from economically backward society. The staff members also used to contribute funds and materials to help the suffering community. In 2001, heavy rain and floods washed away the houses of the neighbouring villagers. We, through CMC Limited, distributed tent materials with carpets along with food grains were distributed to more than 70 families in the villages.
Also, we used to have Education and Training Programs for the passed-out Engineering Graduates with a Job Guarantee Program in order to train them and arrange for their Job Recruitment. We used to collect Fees from these students. However, the Corporate used to approve “No Fees” for 2 to 3 Graduates who are from economically weak section on the basis of proof of Family Income Documentary evidence, etc.
TCS is very active in doing all these activities under CSR.
Care for the Homeless Children
We visited the Home for the Children who are in Police Custody in Vadodara, Gujarat State.
In most of the cases, the children run away from home when their parents scold them, punish them for various reasons. Some of the children are not being taken care of by their parents. These children suffer a lot for their daily food, regular living style and even schooling, etc. They also fall into the hands of exploiters who mislead them. These children are kept in the police custody. We used to get some budget approved by the Company and all the staff members used to make some contribution. With this fund, we used to visit the Children to celebrate our Festivals of Diwali, Christmas, etc.
We also observed that many families, groups, communities and organizations take appointment and visit this home with some food, eatables, useful gifts for these children and spend some valuable time with them. We gather so much information about these children when we talk to them. They sincerely and frankly express themselves and share a lot about their background, their parents and their siblings.
Homeless Children in Mumbai (Snehsadan).
The first Snehasadan home was set up in Andheri (North of Mumbai) in 1962. Fr. Ricardo Francis a Spanish priest troubled by the large numbers of street children that lived on pavements and stations around that area, began to invite the children into his home in the evenings to take refuge while they slept. The boys he took in belonged to different castes and backgrounds. There was one thing they had in common; they were on their own on the street through choice or circumstance.
Snehasadan is a non-governmental organization that provides a Home and a future for homeless street children in Mumbai, India. Over the past 60 years, Snehasadan has been providing shelter for numerous children.
In 1964, Holy Cross Church at Kurla, offered Snehasadan a third home in its compound which was later on shifted to Mogra village purely because of monsoon water logging difficulties. The carpenter who helped build it stayed on with his wife as house-parents.
Snehasadan has 12 houses in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai city. They also have two contact centres, one at CSTM railway station (AMCHI KHOLI) and one near Borivali railway station (NIVARA). These centres work directly with the vulnerable children dwelling there. The centre staff is also involved in community outreach programs and conduct study classes for the children from the neighbourhood community. They also identify the children in need of care and protection and refer such children to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).
In all these homes, the Carmelite Sisters serve as house-parents and take very good care of these children. The children used to stay in this house and they go to the schools to study. They come back to this house, stay, eat and study. These sisters organize various programs for these children to keep them engaged and remain happy with such personality development programs and activities. The police inspectors regularly visit and inspect these houses to ensure safety and security of these children from their side.
Home for Physically and Mentally Challenged People
There is a Home for Physically and Mentally Challenged Individuals. Sisters of Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa Community), Ahmedabad & Vadodara, Gujarat State, India is managing this home.

They can never be called “Disabled” but they are “Differently Abled”, which means, they are definitely with different abilities. We can understand this fact only when we spend some valuable time with them.
The Legion of Mary (An association of Mother Mary), St Ignatius of Loyola Parish visited this home at least twice. I was the Treasurer of this Legion of Mary. Also, I was working in an IT Company, Gujarat Infotech Limited (GIL), Ahmedabad, Gujarat State. This company has another registered charitable trust called Shree Radhakrishna Sadbhavana Trust. All the staff members and the students who were doing Tally Training contributed some funds, clothes, shoes and other useful gift articles. All the volunteers from this trust visited this home. These gift articles were handed over to these challenged people.
My son’s birthday also was celebrated once in this home. Families, Volunteers & Organisations do visit this home, share food, eatables, and gifts. They also spend some time playing with the people living here. Physiotherapy experts also visit this place regularly and help these individuals to do some physical exercise and activities.
Home and Care for Parentless Children : Orphanage
This Orphanage is established and is being managed by the Sisters of Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa’s Community), 831/1, Bhimjipura Nava Vadaj Ahmedabad 380013, Gujarat State.
Once, we went to this home to celebrate our daughter’s birthday with these children. We played with all of them. But most of them were crying when we were leaving them. During this time, we observed that a young couple, our friends and colleagues were adopting a girl child from this home. This child is grown up and they are a very happy family now.
Here also, Families, Volunteers & Organisations do visit this home on holidays and on memorable occasions and festivals. They play with these children and also share whatever they have brought for these children. However, these children love to experience our love more than the gifts.
Home for the Aged or Old Age Home
Jeevan Sandhya Old Age Home – Vanprasth Sewa Samaj, 132 feet Ring Road, Gharda Ghar Rd, near Ankur Bus Stop, Near Kalptaru Part 1 & 2, Naranpura, Ahmedabad, Gujarat 380013, India
A home for the aged was started in Ramkrishna Ashram building some sixty years back. With increasing demand to accommodate more and more ‘AGED’ people, and the necessity of having a larger space, in 1978 Dr. Bachabai Nanavati donated her movable and immovable Trusts’ properties to run the home for old age people, Impressed by good work done by “Jeevan Sandhya” the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation gave 6000 sq. meters of land in most healthy area. The spacious and most beautiful Building is able to accommodate around 200 Aged people. The institution has built convenient rooms with Healthy Food, Medical Facilities, Prayer Room, Lecture Hall, Library, Physiotherapy Center, Beautiful Garden and other facilities.” I was working in an IT Corporate, Gujarat Infotech Limited (GIL), Ahmedabad, Gujarat State having 5 Companies under this IT Corporate. Jamsab Computers Pvt Ltd is also a Company under this Corporate. This Corporate’s MD’s birthday was celebrated in this Home for the Aged in 2019. This company has another registered charitable trust called Shree Radhakrishna Sadbhavana Trust.
Sandhya Deep, Society of the Helpers of Mary, “FERN HOUSE”, Opp. Rani Rupmati Masjid, Nr. St. Xavier’s School, Mirzapur, Ahmedabad 380 001. Sisters of Society of the Helpers of Mary are managing this Home.
Fern House, a 80 year old property, spread over 1,000 sq.yards was given to a registered group of Catholic Association, Ahmedabad. The Fern Family is settled in USA. There are more than 12 occupants in this prestigious home. An inhabitant, a retired Lady Doctor, Dr. Iris Fonseca celebrated her 100th Birthday in June 2022 in this home. She has served the rich and the poor people of the walled city for more than six decades. Unfortunately, she left for her heavenly abode on 2nd October 2022.
The Legion of Mary (An association of Mother Mary), St Ignatius of Loyola Parish, St. Xavier’s Hr. Sec. School Campus, Ahmedabad visited this home. I was also an active member of this Legion of Mary.
Only when we become old going through the old age practical experience with many difficulties, we reflect on whether we had taken good care of our own parents in their old age or whether we gave them valuable, useful time sitting and talking to them with due respect and kindness or whether we helped and supported them.
Slum Residents and Migrated Laborers
Visit to the Slum and Temporary Settlement, Opp. Tripada High School, Near Gota Railway Track.
You can serve the people who deserve, the poor and the needy at any place and at any stage. Such services can be extended in your Personal Life, Professional Life, Religious Life, etc. This means that being of service to others in need in whatever way fits your lifestyle. Whether donating time to the homeless, or assisting in your community as a mentor; it’s as important to you as to those you may serve. This enables you with a good foundation to build your successes in your life. The background of my professional success also came in such a way of life, service, etc.
As mentioned above, I was working in a Corporate establishment having 5 different companies and a charitable trust called, Shree Radhakrishna Sadbhavana Trust, D4 Ankur Complex, Jay Tower, 5th Floor, Near Ankur Bus Stand, Naranpura, Ahmedabad 380013, Gujarat State.
All the staff members and the students doing Tally Training, contributed some funds, clothes, shoes and other useful gift articles. Volunteers from this trust visited this slum settlement. These gift articles were handed over to these challenged people. Another NGO (Non-Government Organization) with Charity Workers, was giving an Education and Training Program to the slum children living here who could not go to the school. Shree Radhakrishna Sadbhavana Trust also donated some amount to this NGO for this purpose of training these children.

All these Charitable Trusts, doing such honourable and noble services described above, do maintain accounts and these accounts are audited annually. The Audit Reports are presented to the Commissioner of Charity, Government of Gujarat and they get Clearance Certificate from the Charity Commissioner every year without fail as per policy and guidelines. I personally used to carry out this process when I was working in St. Xavier’s Social Service Society for 8 years.
Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA)
Most of these Service Societies do receive grants and funds from Indian and International funding organisations on the basis of Project Proposal submitted to them. In order to receive these funds or donations from such International Organisations, the charitable trust should get “No Objection or Clearance Certificate from the Government of India to comply with the policies of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). These funds and grants are the only income for these trusts and are very important component to manage the trusts with their on-going programs, salaries to the Social Workers and also Administrative Expenses.

Even in a business, by desiring to serve others you open up new possibilities. For example, if you truly care about solving your customer’s problems or adding value to their lives, you do your best to understand them. This leads to better communication, a deeper understanding of their problems, and greater motivation to work. Caring about others increases your quality and pushes you to do more.
Importance of service to others
But serving others and the poor doesn’t just make your heart feel good. Studies have shown that there are mental and physical health benefits to serving, like reducing depression, lowering blood pressure and lengthening your lifespan. Putting other people’s needs before your needs, also strengthens your relationships.
You change the world while serving the community
If everyone puts service at the center of his/her life, the world would become a society of love, care, support, empathy, respect, reciprocity, and kindness.
The world won’t change by taking down corrupt leaders, introducing new laws and criticising other leaders or parties. But the change needs to start with the family, the downtrodden, labourers and farmers.
We can create strong family units through love, kindness, and service. Strong families are the foundation of strong neighbourhood, villages, cities and finally nations.
If we all just look beyond a bit and decide to base our lives on the service, we would live happier, wealthier, more purposeful and peaceful lives. When we are guided by the principles of kindness, gratitude, and humility, it’s very easy to lead a successful, fulfilling and thankful life.

One of the biggest guaranties of happiness is service to others. When you are feeling down, an assured way to put yourself up again is to do something nice for someone else.
You are usually sad because you think more about yourself and are worried about yourself. However, your Service to the citizen, society or nation helps you in 4 main ways.
When you are helping others, the focus shifts from you to them or others. When you serve, you forget your own problems and are reminded that others also face difficulties in their lives. This helps you appreciate what you have and reminds you that you don’t suffer alone.
By serving others, you feel useful. Having a positive impact on someone else’s life reminds you of the value you bring and gives your life purpose. Feeling fulfilled makes you incredibly happy.
Serving others opens the doors to solving your own problems. When you help someone else, you are gaining a new perspective. You are a problem-solving person. You are gaining experience. Whatever your problems may be, the process of adding value to someone else’s life helps you learn, adapt, and have a better chance of solving these issues.
Receiving people feel happy about your service to them. They are thankful to you and this makes you feel that you are a good person. In this way God resolves all your problems, lifts you up and puts you in a better and successful place.
You get peace of mind and you can sleep well and at ease. God has given you the ability to change someone’s life. Are you using your ability to do so?

You can clearly understand that I have shared my practical and exciting experience of having worked in a Social Service Society, a Charitable Trust and having visited all these homes, along with my colleagues and professionals. These homes for the deserving and the needy are based in Gujarat, India. The current Prime Minister of India is also from Gujarat State, India.
In short these Charitable Trusts are accountable and answerable to: Funding Organisations, Commissioner of Charity, FCRA and to the Government of India with audited accounts and reports.
However, such activities and services for these noble causes, are being viewed differently instead of viewing them positively and appreciating them.
There are many organisations and individuals who are criticising these meaningful, beneficial, effective and result-oriented services. This means that these criticisers have never visited such homes in their lives and they are unaware of who are the beneficiaries and what kind of constructive, effective programs and services are going on in these homes.

It is my great pleasure to share my practical experience with you. I have gone through all these different stages of personal plans for my future, executing, achieving, reviewing and now experiencing retired life. By reading these facts, you will come to know, what was right, what went wrong, what was the plan for the future and what was the target, how did I achieve the target, what were the difficulties, how did I overcome all these difficulties, and finally, how I am going through the retired stage of my life. What could have been done better in these stages so that to make the current retired life better and fully satisfied. I am sure that this sharing will be of great help to you.

Your Current Status : Student or Job or Business
If you are student, the future plans of a student could be to concentrate more on your studies and complete your education successfully. You can start your earning initially by working online with any of the various options and opportunities available. You can also apply for your job with a very good CV. Meanwhile, you will have to enhance your Personality Development Skills with including Communication Skills as a better plan for your future.
Are you working in a Government Company or a well established Public or Private Company or a fully Private Organisation? You may get a very good salary sufficient to meet your both the ends. If the salary is insufficient you can take care of your immediate requirements and you can keep applying for a better job with a higher salary or target your professional growth with an increased salary.

If you don’t have any of these now, you may go for them in future for your growth and well-being. You might have monthly Equated Monthly Instalments (EMI) to be paid from your salary. You feel happy to pay the EMI regularly, especially when your income is stable. You do have other commitments. Some of you take care of your parents who may be staying with you. You take care of your children’s daily requirements like food, clothing, travel, education, etc.
A Case Study : Practical Experience
This case study could be a plan for your future example.
An efficient, energetic, talented and positive attitude professional, Mr. AD, was working in a very good, well established Government of India Enterprise & a TATA Enterprise for 26 years. He left this company because of an offer for a higher position with a higher salary from a private company.
He took up this new job and started working in this new and fully private company. Mr. MD of this company found Mr AD very good and result-oriented. There was definitely 4 times growth, in terms of Revenue, Staff Strength and also Territory & Technology Expansion with the enhanced services after Mr AD joined this company.
Mr. MD gave him an additional responsibility/assignment with increased salary. After 3 years of growing great, Mr MD started deducting 50% percentage of AD’s salary without any prior notice or without any prior discussion. This amount was not even deposited in any Provident Fund account or in any public savings account earmarked to be returned later to Mr. AD. When he requested Mr. MD to return this deduction, he was told that they would review and consider returning it later. This 50% deduction was done regularly and continued for 2 years period. The total deduction accrued to Rs.11 Lakhs. Mr AD started worrying a lot about this deduction. Because he withdrew his total Provident Fund and Gratuity from the previous company and spent everything for his daughter’s marriage, etc. He did not have any other savings except a few small investments.
Mr MD started giving him lot of troubles and harassment by following many tactics. At one point of time Mr AD was conveyed that his performance was not good and the amount could not be returned to him. Now, Mr AD’s major concern was this Rs.11 Lakhs. Meanwhile, Mr MD remained busy with finding ways and means to retain this deduction and Mr AD remained busy with finding ways and means to get this amount from him. Mr AD started approaching the Employee Welfare Department and the Labour Commissioner’s office seeking their help in recovering this amount from Mr MD of this company. They did give their verbal guidelines and also expressed their inability to resolve this issue directly. Mr AD went through all the troubles and tactics, not giving up hope, and also not compromising on his performance in this on-going job.
Finally, Mr AD took a smart decision as he was 59 years old at that point of time. He applied for another job, went through the interview process and he got a better offer from the new company. Keeping this job as highly confidential, Mr AD conveyed to Mr MD that he was taking an early retirement. Mr MD immediately accepted the retirement note and decision. Mr AD left this company with a happy note. By God’s Grace and Blessings, Mr MD started returning this Rs.11 Lakhs in bits and pieces, i.e. @ Rs.25,000/- per month on an average. Finally and thankfully, this full amount was returned in 2 years time. Therefore, Mr AD’s total loss was only the probable interest of Rs.1.50 Lakhs approximately, he could have earned in these 4 years, if he had gone for any saving. However, he was very grateful that his money was returned to him. This definitely was a positive, happy and memorable event.

Health is Important
At one point of time I was getting a 6-figure salary per month as Assistant Director & later as CEO. My wife was getting a 5-figure salary per month as Vice Principal of an English Medium Secondary Private School. I was regularly playing Table Tennis from the age of 49 years as part of my physical exercise. All of a sudden and unexpectedly, I had a heart attack at the age of 61 years. I had 90% blockage in my heart. I went through an angiography surgery which was successful.
After 5 months of this angiography surgery, I had Covid-19 attack also. By God’s grace and blessing, I was miraculously saved from these two dangerous situations. My daily yoga after angiography and my prayer with God’s blessings and grace saved me. Thanks to God. I had to resign from my on-going job and my wife also had to resign from her job to take care of me. We both moved to Canada where our son is staying. Now we are in Costa Rica (part of Central America) with our daughter. Our children are very kind to us and are taking care of us fully.
What is our status now? We are forced to retire early because of my bad health. Are we getting any pension or any other financial benefit to take care of us? I am getting only a 4-figure pension which is very less. Wherein my children have to spend $380 (that is Rs.29,000/- approximately) per month for my monthly medicines alone. How big is a 4-figure pension per month compared to the 6-figure salary I was getting plus 5-figure salary of my wife per month?

Good Health Insurance and Life Insurance Policies
Luckily, I had two different Good Health Insurance Policies which really helped me financially during my heart angiography surgery. This Insurance Policy was taken from Royal Sundaram General Insurance Company Ltd which helped me financially for Heart Surgery by paying the full amount of Rs.3.20 Lakhs.
I also had Covid-19 Pandemic attack after 5 months of my heart angiography surgery. I was again hospitalized for the treatment. I had another Good Health Insurance Policy from The New India Assurance Company Ltd through Citibank Credit Card which helped me financially for the Covid-19 Pandemic Treatment. Total amount spent on the treatment was Rs.4.45 Lakhs. We received Rs.2.69 Lakhs from the Insurance Company as reimbursement. We had to spend the balance Rs.1.76 Lakhs from our own savings.
I also had taken many Life Insurance Policies with Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) which really helped me financially at different stages including the Policy as Guarantee Document when I went for a Housing Loan with HDFC. I also got very good return when my Insurance Policies were matured. I am really thankful to these Insurance Companies.
You might know that there are Group Insurance Policies initiated and covered by the employers. However, please go for your own Insurance Policies which are very helpful at the right time.

Your Family Commitment and Fulfilment
Before I got married, I took care of my parents, took care of the education of my siblings. After my marriage I continued taking care of my parents and started taking care of my own family. However, I continued giving comparatively less support to my siblings also till they start earning.
These are your family commitment and you need to fulfil them.
Invest a lump-sum amount as Fixed Deposit for a period of 5 years. This will give you an interest on monthly instalment basis (calculated upto 8%) on the amount deposited. Instead of withdrawing this amount for your use, you reinvest it as Recurring Deposit on monthly basis for a period of 5 years. This also gives you upto 8% of interest.
d) Recurring Deposit (RD)
Open the RD Account for 3 years or 5 years. This RD amount comes from Monthly Income Scheme (MIS) on monthly basis. This will give you another 8% (approximately) interest on the recurring deposit.
Maintain certain Percentage of amount towards purely on Pension Scheme (Tier-I). Your contribution could be either on monthly/quarterly/half-yearly or even on yearly basis.
Also maintain some Percentage of amount towards Saving Scheme within the NPS (Tier-II). This also gives you good earning. However, this depends upon the market condition.
Loans help you to buy your assets/property, investment for your business and even for future growth and development. Secondly, they also help you to have a Tax Saving Plan as per Income Tax guidelines. In my case, I had Housing Loan and Education Loan which helped me in Tax Saving Plan.

In my life, everything went on smooth. RETIREMENT PLAN
National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is available in all the Western Countries but not in India.
As per this NSSF, the Government deducts some percentage of amount from the salary of all the professionals whether you are working in Government or Private company. After retirement, every individual will get equal amount as NSSF irrespective of the position or salary grade they were enjoying in their service. This Social Security Fund takes care of your retirement life.
The biggest long-term financial goal for majority of the people is saving enough money to take care of them after retirement.

This has led them to such a situation of living in old age home as they could not trouble their children. Even the children find it really difficult to fully support their old age parents especially they need more finance to pay their debts and to take care of their own children’s higher education.
There are parents whose children live abroad and they are unable to keep their old parents with them abroad wherein they are badly in need of love, affection and care from their children.

What went right during my earning period?
I changed my job for a better growth and for a higher salary. There were financial challenges and financial expectations with ambitions.
I was able to make a good plan, monthly budget and I started making good investments as per the investment list mentioned above.
What went wrong during this period?
I did not make a better future plan of my life with necessary goals, especially to take care of me and my family after my retirement. I could not visualize early retirement life. I wanted to work at least till the age of 70 years, but I retired at 61.
My periodic review, assessment and analysis were absent, because I was busy with many things.
I did not set up a proper goal and target for the future. I could not read any such article sharing such practical experience like this.
What was the plan for the future?
I was only very positive about future as my present condition, earning and position were very good. I never thought that my health would become bad. I never thought my wife also would resign and retire early because of my bad health condition.
What was the target?
I did not plan and set up any remarkable and achievable goal or target. I didn’t realize the importance at the time of earning. This makes me suffer only after retirement.
How did I achieve the target and how will you achieve your target?
Firstly, I did not set up any target. I kept on investing as and when it was possible. I kept on buying movable and non-movable assets as and when I had some extra finance with me.
I should have set up a target for my Retirement Fund. I did not realize the importance at that point of time, but now I am going through this experience with less monthly income.
What were the difficulties and how did I overcome all these difficulties?
I had no savings for children’s higher education. I had to go for Education Loan. I used to save Income Tax under the section 80E on Education Loan.
No savings for daughter’s marriage. I had withdrawn my Provident Fund. I did not go for another loan.
Salary deduction on monthly basis which had no assurance of getting back.
Sudden Health problem forced me and my wife to resign from the on-going job. I could not sit idle at home. I learnt Digital Marketing as I was very comfortable with traditional marketing with Management.
I have no sufficient monthly pension to take care of my on-going monthly medicines after the heart surgery. This situation forced me to fully dependent on my children for my monthly medicines and everything.
Finally, how am I going through my current retired stage of life?
I wanted to work till the end of life so that I can contribute to the poor and the needy also, because I started my career in a Social Service Society and I want to end with Social Service.
I have become 100% Dependent on my children who fully pay for all my expenses. At times, I feel uncomfortable in frankly asking them whatever I am in need of as I don’t want to trouble them much. Because I was very active in earning, planning, taking decisions and spending.
I am unable to fully utilize my capabilities, expertise and techniques after retirement. This has put me in an inactive stage.
What could have been done better in the earlier stages so that to make the retired life better and fully satisfied?
After withdrawing my Provident Fund from the well-established TATA Company, I should have continued my Provident Fund in the last 6 years of my career when I was working in Private Companies with a higher salary. (i.e. Financial Years 2014-15 to 2019-20)
I had more options like PPF (Public Provident Fund) & VPF (Voluntary Provident Fund). I should have taken advantage of these schemes.
I started the National Pension Scheme (NPS) only in March 2016. The main objective, at this time, was Income Tax Saving option with maximum amount of Rs.50,000/- (tax exemption limit) per annum. I should have started the NPS much earlier and also with the contribution of higher amount per annum. This decision and appropriate action could have put me in better and comfortable position with very good return as Monthly Pension.
In 3 different financial years, I paid more Income Tax from my salary. This could have been planned and executed better so that my saving could have been more.

This is based on the actual experience. I visited almost all the Engineering Colleges of Gujarat State, India, at least 50% of the colleges in Maharashtra State and many colleges in Madhya Pradesh, India for Career Development Programs. One of the most famous questions prevailing in the colleges is, “Who is your Role Model and Why?”. This question is being asked during the interview for fresh graduates. The common answer that would come from most of the students would be, “My father or my mother”. In some of the cases the answer would be other relatives. Also some of the students would mention about a great personality.
A role model is a person whose behavior, example, practical experience or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people, who are willing or dreaming to grow to extent or more to such persons.
Inspirational : the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative. Something or someone that is inspiring is exciting and makes you feel strongly interested, very practical and enthusiastic. Synonyms: uplifting, encouraging, exciting, moving.

History of Thanksgiving Holiday in Western Countries
Thanks giving is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in the United States, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Liberia. It began as a day of giving thanks and offering sacrifice for the blessing of the harvest for the current year and of the preceding year.
Thanks giving is an unusual holiday because it doesn’t always fall on the same day or the date of the year like Christmas, New Year and Halloween.
In the US
In the US, Thanksgiving is traditionally celebrated on the fourth Thursday in every November. This holiday was traditionally held on the last Thursday of November, whether it is 4th Thursday or 5th Thursday of the month.
In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln said that Americans should recognize the last Thursday of every November as a day of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving became an official national holiday in United States of America in 1870, along with Christmas, New Year’s Day and Independence Day. At that time, however, it was decided that the President would decide the date of Thanksgiving Holiday.
In Canada
Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, is an annual Canadian holiday, held on the second Monday in October since 1957, which celebrates the harvest and other blessings of the past year. What Do People Do? Many people have a day off work on the second Monday of October. In Costa Rica
In anticipation of Halloween Day, people all over the world dream of scary or comical elaborated costumes. Halloween is a festival celebrated in the U.S predominately. The Costa Rican Masquerade Day, known in the native Costa Rican, La Mascarada, is an adaption of Halloween Day in the U.S, usually celebrated on the 31st of October. It is a recent tradition in Costa Rica which has gained popularity in the country in the last few years.
Origin of Masquerade Day
They generally use mask and black colour costumes. Costa Rican masks are not ordinary masks: they are usually oversized paper mache heads that depict prominent and popular characters from politics, mythology (in this case, devils and animals are popular), and characters from sports and films are also taken into consideration.
Producing a mask is time-consuming and a tedious affair. The craftsman starts with a hand-made mould made from clay. This mould is left to dry for about a week; after that, the mold is carefully and meticulously covered with strips of paper attached with glue produced from flour and water.
How is it celebrated?
People, mostly children on giant costumed puppets march the streets covering houses, malls and shops, and they are always accompanied by small music bands known as cimarron.
Frankly speaking, I was based in India for 61 years of my life. This was the first time I heard about Halloween and I personally saw the children going around with small boxes or buckets singing, dancing and celebrating very cheerfully greeting each other. The elders from different houses and shops offer them chocolates and sweets. In many houses, the chocolates are kept either at the entrance of the houses or in the cars. Children pick up decent quantity of chocolates and move ahead.

The holiday in the US, is associated with a traditional turkey dinner (that has plenty of side dishes like Gujarati/Rajasthani “Thali” or Kerala’s “Sadya” in India), along with a thoughtful reflection on everything that people have to be grateful for.
In Canada, traditionally, they include in their meal; roast turkey and seasonal produce, such as pumpkin, corn ears and pecan nuts. Now, the meal may consist of other foods, particularly if the family is of non-European descent.

Thanksgiving Holidays in India!
Thanksgiving is not recognized as a national holiday in India. Thanksgiving is celebrated in few parts of India, mainly in the parts of Christian population and in Goa.
India being a predominantly agricultural nation, the population of India relies on a good harvest for their livelihood. This is the time when the fields begin to bear fruit or giving fruit because of the hard work and strong belief in God.
However, there are festivals at different times throughout the year convey the theme of Thanksgiving, such as Lohri in the states of Punjab, Haryana and parts of Himachal Pradesh, Pongal and Onam, celebrated in South India, Vaisakhi or Baisakhi celebrated in Punjab, Haryana and other northern states, Makar Sankranthi or Uttarayan (Gujarat) or Maghi or Poush Sankranthi (West Bengal) in other states of India. There are Holidays on these occasions.
Generally, January is the month of thanksgiving in India. Every year, the month of January brings with it a host of festivals of joy and gratitude celebrated across India.
Lohri
In the month of January, the North India, especially the states of Punjab, Haryana and parts of Himachal Pradesh, are filled with enthusiasm all around as they wait for the winter harvest or rabi crops. The important crop of wheat is sown in October and ready to be harvested in mid-January. As the earth begins its journey, moving closer to the Sun, the people celebrate by welcoming Uttarayan. It signifies the end of the coldest month of Paush, and beginning of Magh. On the day of Lohri, children go door-to-door asking for lohri or loot in the form of money, peanuts, jaggery and sweets. They sing in praise of Dulha Bhatti, the local Robin Hood who helped the poor by taking from the rich and saving innocent women. In the evening, a bonfire is lit with people circling it and offering puffed corn. They chant ‘Aadar aye dilather jaye (let the honour come and poverty disappear). There is dancing and singing with the flavour of traditional folk songs and instruments. The next day is Maghi, the beginning of the month of Magh. People take a dip in the river and give charity as gratitude for all they have been given.
Bhogali Bihu
Bihu denotes three festivals celebrated through the farming calender in Assam. Bhogali Bihu is the last of these and marks the time when the hard work of farmers bears fruit. Also known as Magh Bihu and Maghar Domahi, it’s an important time for farmers as they get to sell their harvest. The first day is Uruka when a grand feast is organized at night. On the morning of Bhogali Bihu, young men build a temporary cottage called Bhelaghar in nearby fields. They also build another structure called Meji with hay. During the night, villagers gather at the Bhelaghar and cook different kinds of delicacies. Men and women sing, dance and play conventional games. The next day is the day of Magh, when young people burn the Meji homes, offer prayers to the fire god to provide bountiful harvests for the next year. People visit other homes and exchange Assamese delicacies. Food is offered to the fire god through the burnt Meji homes with the belief that the fire will take away the cold. Bull fights, cock fights, egg fights and nightingale fights are organized for recreation too.
“Makar Sankranthi” (Maharashtra & other parts of India) or “Uttarayan” (Gujarat) or “Maghi” or “Poush Sankranthi” (West Bengal) festival marks the beginning of the harvest season when new crops are worshipped and shared with delight. The harvest festival heralds a change in season, as from this day, the Sun begins its movement from Dakshinayana (South) to Uttarayana (North) hemisphere.
In Gujarat, it is popularly celebrated as the day of kites i.e. the day of Uttarayan and Vasi Uttarayan. Savouries like undhiyo and chikkis made of sesame, jaggery and peanuts are distributed as well. I have been staying in Ahmedabad & Vadodara, Gujarat for 41 years with successful career and I have practically gone through this experience. In Maharashtra, people exchange puran poli and Tilgul amongst loved ones, to keep aside ill feelings and animosity.
“Baisakhi” is a spring harvest festival for Sikhs and Hindus. … It marks the Sikh new year and commemorates the formation of Khalsa panth of warriors under Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. Vaisakhi is also an ancient festival of Hindus, marking the Solar New Year and also celebrating the spring harvest.
“Pongal” is one such big festival, celebrated every year in mid-January, mostly in the south of India and especially in Tamil Nadu, to mark the harvest of crops and offer a special thanksgiving to God, the sun, the earth, and the cattle.
They decorate their houses and make colorful ‘kolams’ or ‘rangoli’ in the streets. There is a special day dedicated to the cattle. They are washed, their horns painted and adorned with flowers and beads. They are given respect and are worshipped. They also have bull and bird fighting like Jallikattu in parts of the state on this day.
“Onam” is the biggest festival of the year in Kerala. It is generally celebrated in the last week of August. The purpose of the festival is to commemorate the mythical King Mahabali, celebrate the end of the monsoon season, and welcome the harvest. This is a great festival to experience in India as it is full of happiness, excitement, and enjoyment by people of all ages. ‘Sadya’ is the traditional and special meal with 21 varieties, they have on this auspicious day.
All these people do go to their places of worship to give thanks to God for good harvest and for every other blessings. They do exchange greetings and best wishes with their family members, neighbors, relatives and friends.

I started my career in 1981 in St. Xavier’s Social Service Society as Office Superintendent doing Administration, Accounts and Coordination work interacting with the Field Workers and the slum dwellers. I worked in this society for nearly 8 years.
I joined CMC Limited (A Government of India Enterprise) as Office Assistant. I learnt a lot in this company. This company became A TATA Enterprise (a subsidiary to TCS). I worked in this company for 26 years. I was a Center Head for Training Centers engaged in Career Development & Recruitment Program with Job Guarantee to the Engineers.
I joined a private organization based at Pune. This Pune company was also fully engaged in Career Development Program with Job Guarantee to the Engineers (IT, Electronics, Mechanical, Electrical & Civil). Here I was able to practice whatever I learned in the previous company with TATA Quality, and achieved a great success and growth as Assistant Director. I was able to start another branch of this company as an expansion. I worked in this organization for nearly 5 years.
I joined as CEO in a Private IT Corporate (Gujarat Infotech Limited) operating with 3 other limited companies and also a Charitable Trust. I worked in this company for 2 years.
Traditional Marketing or Business Development
During my 26 years of remarkable and memorable career in CMC Limited(A Government of India Enterprise, A TATA Enterprise & a subsidiary to TCS), I was mostly engaged in the Administration and other Support Functional activities from 1988 to 2000 (i.e. 12 years). During this period, I completed my Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration. However, I was getting bored of doing the same Administration and other routine activities for 12 years. I needed a change. I attended a national seminar organized by my company at Hyderabad.
I met the Consultant who gave us the seminar and told him about my experience of performing the same routine activities with slow growth. I asked him, “please tell me which function can really help me do more interesting, challenging, result oriented, rewarding and with fast growing experience”. He very clearly and confidently told me, “get into Marketing, you can enjoy the work and you can grow fast”.
I got into Marketing and Project Management with the help of my Branch Head of this organization, who was very kind and understanding. I was handling the Education & Training Strategic Business Unit. This Strategic Business Unit gave me an opportunity in practicing the Traditional Marketing/Business Development. After this change-over, I could grow as Center Head, Regional Head, Assistant Director and finally as CEO during this period of 2007 to 2020 (i.e. in the last 14 years of my career).

My first hands-on with Word Press
I registered a Domain Name with GoDaddy and also registered Web Hosting with Host Gator. After this I wanted to create a Website. I, being purely a Non-Technical person, I had the hands-on experience for the first time with Word Press to build my own website. Since I didn’t take any internship or any practical experience, I had to go through a lot of difficulties. I had to take help from Word Press support team to install Word Press software. I was able to build my first Blog which was “Benefits of Word Press”. I tried to implement whatever I learned in the Basic Course. This Blog remained in my website for 1 year as I was busy with other work schedule.
Now I was so determined to go ahead further. I tried to use almost all the features provided by Word Press. This is my first Blog that is being published.

I recently left my own country, and I have been trying to settle down in another Country, a part of Central America. I was trying all my best in applying for any online job or to any other job to work from home. Though I have a very good experience and exposure, a very strong CV with knowledge and required skills, I was not able to get any job.
